Kerala woman leaves trail of fake marriages, cheats many men

In a society where several conmen have cheated women into fraudulent marriages and vanished with their money, this was something of a first: Over a few years, a woman in Kerala managed to cheat several men into marrying her, complete with wedding ceremonies, and make away with their money.

The woman, identified as Shalini from Ayur in south Kerala, is believed to have married some two dozen men in the state. Her latest marriage, to one Sasindran Nair from Chingavanam in Kottayam last week, turned out to be her undoing as the police managed to nab her after Nair filed a complaint. She had apparently evaded the police net in the past because most men who were conned by her were embarrassed to file a complaint.

Shalini is believed to have given Nair the slip on the very day of their marriage, made away with the jewellery that he bought for her and about Rs50,000 in cash and crossed over to the neighbouring Tamil Nadu State.
On Tuesday, a police team from Kerala finally caught up with her at Palani in Tamil Nadu and took her into custody. After their marriage on June 5, Nair and Shalini had gone to Alappuzha, from where Shalini game him the slip and vanished with the wedding jewels and cash.

Nair knew he had been conned only in the evening when Shalini, who had gone out in the afternoon, failed to return. Reports indicate that she had advised Nair to have a no-frills wedding so that some money could be saved for their future life. As it turned out, his agreeing to that suggestion perfectly fitted her scheme.

Ironically, Shalini was trapped by police after it was found that she had been in touch with one Ratish from Kalamassery, to whom she had been married earlier. Police then used Ratish, to locate her using mobile GPS positioning. After a series of mobile calls to locate her, police finally caught up with her in Palani.

Shalini had convinced most of the bridegrooms that she was a practicing lawyer, and the list of men she had married and conned that police have been able to piece together, shows that she picked mostly on autorickshaw drivers for conning.
